For appropriate games you’ll generally agree with, I suggest Mario Bros games from original to newer ones and Minecraft Java edition on the PC(also on PS4, Switch, Xbox and New 3DSXL, but PC is always a better experience.) Consoles are safer besides interacting with other players online, they aren’t hackable if you’re responsible and have decent parental controls. If that’s his only access to internet, he won’t be able to look up how to crack it(Kids are smart. I’m probably behind and Indo keep up on these things.) Minecraft is child safe, no more violent than Mario bros. Jumping on enemies. Very fun sandbox game and leader in the genre. You can look up game play footage for any game he’s interested in. It is your judgement as to what he’s ready for. I would suggest talking to him if he’s insistant that he can handle subject matter and what he’ll see.
The benefit to getting him a game like Fornite or Overwatch or Ark survival, is that he’ll develop good reflexes and be caught up with his friends if it’s popular. I would suggest checking out the return policy of any store in case he dislikes an experience. I’ve not personally had a problem with violence as I grew up playing GTA series from age 12+. Which brings me too… You need to supervise him when the internet is on to teach him caution and manners. Encourage him to ask questions about content he’s viewing. GTA V is still pretty lively and allows you to hire a sex worker(not graphic, just movements from select angles, excluding mods on PC he’d have to search for. I don’t reccomend this so young, but your decision.) and go to a strip club with topless women. When he’s older, if he wants a game like that, you can use the content to educate him, but he probably won’t want you snooping over his shoulder. If you ask him beforehand, as you research the games together, that’s less embarrassing than sneaking up on him or asking surprised in the store. (Needless to say, I reccomend physical copies and condone downloading for a game you bought and are banned from since bans happen for no reason these days for online games. Use a VPN.)
You don’t want your son to get sucked into that stuff, trust me. I was 12–14 when I started and ended with the beginings of this trend. I was actively involved in a few youtuber’s communities, atheist community, who knew my age, and when things got more extreme, I spoke up and got many messages and abuse of features that intimidated me. It sent me into the right hands and I’m honestly releived despite the opposite end being feminism and lefists(we argue, but it’s for improvement.) My parents just told me I didn’t post my name, city or address so I’m fine, but that was nerve racking at the time. I’m scared to think where I end up these days. I’m 21 now. I wouldn’t want another kid getting sucked in, being open about their identity and realizing too late that these aren’t role models. They aren’t above doxxing minors I know that intimately and from reports.
